Located in the heart of Oakland's Rockridge district, InsideOut Design, Inc. is a partnership between architects and landscape architects which seeks to discover the seamless, symbiotic relationship of indoor and outdoor space, and the common ground between them. We believe this concept exemplifies the best of what California living has to offer, with an added 21st century focus on sustainability.

We offer architecture, landscape and interior design services, as well as irrigation audits and arborist reports, and have completed projects throughout the greater Bay Area. Julianna Fecskes Phillips is the Architecture Principal of InsideOut Design, with nearly 25 years of experience designing residential, educational and commercial projects.

Her practice is cross-disciplinary, in the fields of architecture, landscape and art, and the conceptual relationship between them. She is also a LEED accredited design professional and is dedicated to seeking sustainable, green solutions whenever possible.

As the future of California landscapes increasingly require thoughtfully planned and conscious water-use, InsideOut offers Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL) professional services to qualify the integrity of landscape irrigation efficiency throughout the Bay Area.
We advise irrigation through the lenses of sustainable landscape practices, water budgeting, irrigation design & equipment efficiency, and irrigation auditing.
A portion of a gorgeous 30-acre property near the Napa and Sonoma Wine Country region will be used as a guest retreat.
An existing dilapidated structure was rejuvenated to provide generous spaces for focused retreats, leisurely get-togethers, and communing with the beautiful surroundings.

This residential property in the hills of the Montclair District is located on a deep, rectangular lot, with grades dropping over 30 feet from the front of the lot to the rear.
Design solutions included terracing the rear portion of the lot to provide an upper terrace with a fire pit, a mid-level terrace with a shade trellis and dining area, and a lower level vegetable garden and lawn for the kids and family dog.
