We create built environments that enhance the well being of their occupants, achieve economy through conservation, and honor the natural resources in every site. The Furman Sustainability Center wanted to use a local architect and one that focused on green design. Johnston Design Group was the ideal candidate, not only because of Scott's experience and expertise, but also because of his passion for such a unique project.
Services
We start with a blank canvas because we have no over-arching style.
We prefer to collaborate in the development of climatically responsive designs that express our clients' vision.
Our design process starts with you.
We want to understand you and how you want to live and work in your built environment.
Understanding what you love, what drew you to the site, and how you connect with your people and your world informs what we design for you.
We're advocates of restorative design, but we won't tell you how green your building should be.

Our commitment to moving beyond sustainability unites us.
Together with our clients, we reverse wastefulness, serve as good stewards of our natural resources, and restore a lost connection between people and the planet.

We define it as an intentional process, one that creates a built environment promoting wellness, economy through conservation, and a more meaningful connection to nature.
Sustainable design is the equivalent of being on life support - it sets a low bar by trying to make things less bad.
We've been doing this for a long time.
We designed the first LEED Platinum building in South Carolina and have earned national recognition for thought leadership in the field, applying an integrated, intentional approach based on a rare combination of knowledge and experience.

The native longleaf pine, once a cornerstone of our ecology, is now in decline.
It requires fire to reproduce and modern forest resource management prevents most forest fires, so we can produce more pulp wood and make more money.
As a result, we have fewer longleaf pines and more kudzu and privet, highly invasive species that are rapidly destroying our native habitat.
For too long, our economy has been based on ideas that turned out to be equally destructive: More is better.
Resources are expendable.
