The site on which the house is situated is unconventional, in that access to the site is from a corner of the rectangular site, rather than from one of its sides.
The L-shape was chosen to provide a formal entry court within that corner, while screening the rest of the yard to create the largest private yard possible.
The large private yard has patios directly accessible from the family room, the dining room, and the kitchen.
The house is also situated to provide maximum sunlight and views to the "public" areas of the house.

Located on a high hill, this typical one story ranch was not taking advantage of the views above the tree line, which include views of the Boston skyline.
The solution to providing the additional square footage that this home owner desired was to build it on as a second floor to take advantage of these panoramic views.
However, the owner didn't want to go from having a "boxy" ranch to having a "boxy" colonial just by adding another featureless floor.
The focus here was on creating unique and exciting spaces within, while creating character and interest on the outside.

We wanted something unusual for our house-something cozy, with not a lot of unused space, while still feeling spacious.
Deer Hill Architects did that for us.
