Founded in 1965, the Birmingham Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) represents a total membership of approximately 350 licensed architects, interns and affiliates. AIA Birmingham's primary goal is to promote good design and quality in the practice of architecture. As architects together, we give voice to our shared values in order to shape our neighborhoods.
AIA members strive to make the world a better place for everyone to live, work and play. The American Institute of Architects is a three-tier organization. Every member of The American Institute of Architects is a member of the local chapter, the state organization and the national organization. AIA Birmingham members are also members of the AIA Alabama Council and the AIA Gulf States Region, which includes the states Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Each tier offers distinct benefits to its members.

We have many favorite phrases from last year that we are trying to forget.
This pandemic has changed the way we work, play, and treat people.
This will especially have a growing effect on the way we design our built environments.
In this ever changing world, we need to be leaders in design, and the best way we can do this is through membership, organization, advocacy, and showing the value of architecture in our everyday lives.
AIA hosts numerous events throughout the year that connect us (virtually), the architectural industry, and surrounding communities as well.

Birmingham for 10 years!
So much has changed in the profession over the last 50 years and over the last 10 years.
BIM and Revit are the new AutoCAD, design build is common practice these days and owners have access to so much information through the internet (this is both good and bad).
I had no idea 10 years ago what a HUGE impact an architect makes on my day to day life, or the commitment you all make to your profession- years of education (5 years), internship (5600 professional development hours), 7 architect registration exams, 12 hours of health, safety and welfare continuing education (yearly) and keeping your license renewed in each state you practice.

No matter what kind of project you have in mind, you should speak with an architect who is a member of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the earliest stage of the design process.
Architects have the education, training, experience and vision to maximize your construction dollar and ease the entire design and construction process.
Architects are educated to help you define what you want to build, present options you might never have considered and help you get the most for your valuable investment.
