HKP Architects has been providing architectural services to the Pacific Northwest since 1952. Founded on the values of honesty, simplicity, and service, our firm is highly respectful of our many long-term relationships with clients and the community. Our work shows remarkable consistency over the past six decades, and we remain dedicated to providing architectural design that is high-value, environmentally responsible, and sensitive to its site.
We focus on civic buildings and spaces, educational facility planning and design, non-profit and community-oriented projects, and private homes; work that lifts people up in their lives. Whether they are places of learning, affordable housing or cultural institution work, our objective is to realize our clients' vision and optimize every opportunity.
All of our projects emphasize long-term value for our clients through efficient use of space, appropriate use of materials, sustainability, and the benefits of natural light. Founded as Henry Klein and Associates in 1952, HKP was the first full-service architectural firm in Skagit County, Washington.

The term Passive House refers to a rigorous, voluntary standard for healthy, comfortable and energy efficient buildings with a reduced ecological footprint.
It results in ultra-low energy use and reduced utility bills for space heating and cooling.
Buildings that meet this standard are also thermally comfortable with no cold drafts, and have extremely high air quality, free of toxins or mold.
The standard is not confined to residential properties; office buildings, schools, and other commercial buildings have also been constructed to the standard.

I have always been impressed by HKP Architects' demonstrated commitment to project success, collaborative approach to project and contractual challenges, and fairness in dealing with all parties.
Their project approach reflects well on the leadership and culture of HKP Architects, which I have often used as the standard of measure when evaluating the approach and performance of other architectural firms who are dealing with challenging project issues, which so frequently arise on construction projects.

The certifying organization in the U.S. for Passive House building is Passive House Institute U.S. (PHIUS).
A Passive House certified building can be designed by anyone, but PHIUS recommends that a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) participate in the design process.
A CPHC is a qualified design professional that has undergone extensive training in Passive House design principles and passed a rigorous examination.
In some cases the building designer is also a CPHC.
For the best results the CPHC is involved early in the process to keep the project aligned with the PH principles that will ultimately be required for certification.
