Established in 1988, the Nuckolls Fund is an endowment fund in support of college-level programs that inspire students with an understanding of light in architecture. Each year, the Fund solicits proposals from colleges and universities for innovative educational ideas consistent with the Fund's objectives, and awards grants after rigorous review.From inception, the Fund has given $1,600,000 to support lighting education in North America. Additionally, each year four awards are presented to students for outstanding achievement in lighting studies.
Detailed descriptions of the criteria for each grant are included in the respective Request for Proposal (RFP) for each grant. The students who receive academic awards are nominated by their faculty. I am pleased to report that this year's grant proposals were once again of a high quality and the Board decided to give a total of $70,000 in grants and awards, with $50,000 in grants and $20,000 in awards.

The officers of the Fund are members of the Board.
The Fund disburses grant monies according to a detailed schedule and budget submitted by the grant's principal investigator.
The Fund also requires written reports at each phase of the grant to demonstrate performance.
A final report assesses the project and offers recommendations for further action.

A. Prior to the board meeting where the actual decision is made, each member receives a copy of all proposals.
They review them, and become quite familiar with each proposal.
Then, at a board meeting where generally all members are present, a lively discussion of the merits of each proposal takes place.
If any serious questions are involved, phone calls may be made during the meeting to the appropriate persons to clear up the issues in question.
A series of votes are taken until a clear recipient emerges in each category.
