Thank you for visiting Cate Design. As an architect with over 30 years of experience, it has always been my passion to design beautiful, unique architecture which is responsible to the environment - what has come to be called 'green' design. Through close personal interaction with my clients, I endeavor to make each project appropriate to the southwest and site and uniquely special for my clients.

Through a close interaction as well with a very select group of technical consultants, Cate Design can provide services on a wide range of both residential and non-residential projects. And as a lifetime resident of Arizona, my knowledge of designing in the southwest and devotion to being appropriate to the special needs of my clients combine for truly one-of-a-kind projects which make them delighted for years to come.

I also invite you call or stop by to visit Cate Studio and Gallery to see the stained glass, fine art and photographic treasures offered by my wife Monika Cate.

As a young boy in Tucson, I grew up playing in the desert.
My friends and I would spend hours building forts and clubhouses in the desert.
Since it was hot, we naturally learned that if we dug into the ground and used shade, we could have a natural, cool environment.
Also being quite interested in science, I read one day in Popular Science magazine about photovoltaic panels - invented by NASA, they produced electricity from sunlight.
I found this remarkable.
At the same time, I watched as the desert which I loved was rapidly destroyed by urban sprawl, and read the news about the effects of pollution on our environment in small and large scale.
Baker: This home was included in the 2004 Sedona Home Tour.
The owners, after being gracious hosts the first day, went and toured the other homes.
They came back and said this is the only house on the tour where there is life.
In the other homes people are tiptoeing silently through.
Here, everyone is talking and enjoying themselves as if they were neighborsThe owners hired me for this green home project without ever meeting me.
In my first contact with them, a phone call, they called to say "we saw one of your designs, a rammed earth home in Sedona, and we want you to design our new home".
This 19,000 square foot charter school in Cottonwood, Arizona, is certainly unique.
When I first met the headmaster of the school, he held up a picture of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and said "this is what we want" - he takes his school's title very seriously and proudly.
My input, given that operating costs would play a significant role in the success of the school, was to be as energy efficient as possible.
In league with the project manager Mack Coker, we met all their needs.
The entire school is built of SIP panels - roofs, exterior walls, and interior partitions.
From the beginning, we hoped to find an architect who was able to think outside the box - and we found that ability in Paul Cate.
Our experience with Paul Cate was all about the relationship - our relationship with Paul was strong as he always listened to our thoughts, dreams and ideas.
He focused on our family and how we would use and enjoy our home.
He was also willing to occasionally challenge our thinking by asking a simple question."why?" - at the same time, he would pour resources into researching the merit of our ideas, often meeting with representatives of products we wanted to include.
