Genesis Architecture
I started Genesis Architecture in 1992, already with an interest and fascination with the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose work continues to remain ageless and compelling as evidenced in the many publications still being written about him and the popularity of his buildings. The spaces and details of his homes have a certain resonance and charm with people that few buildings can claim, whether old or contemporary.

Is this due to his 'organic' architecture that replicates something we experience in nature? Although this mystery is difficult to define, one knows it when you experience it. My career has been a quest to design and learn about this kind of architecture that resonates with the human soul as well as with nature. The portfolios on this website show examples of these designs produced by Genesis Architecture for over 20 years.

This home was my updated interpretation of the Prairie Style with modern functionality. It emphasized a strong unified interior space where even the upstairs bedrooms had windows looking out above the great room and "skylights" that borrowed light from the larger actual skylights above the great room space.

Our approach to designing your home or building is very interactive and you will have the opportunity to provide review and feedback along every step of the process.
This is the beginning of every project.
An extensive questionnaire and interview process is used to gather your goals and parameters for the project.
After meeting to discuss the design direction and general parameters of the project in the Schematic Design phase, further work is done in the Design Development phase which includes any changes to the design that you want, further detailed work on the design, site, interior cabinetry, trim and even interior design considerations.
We were attracted to Genesis Architecture's beautiful craftsman and prairie homes and home designs.
We wanted a custom home that blends the craftsman and mountain architecture styles into a custom lake home designed for our lake property and lake living.
Ken blended mountain and craftsmen styles to meet our tastes.
We started the design process with a list of functional and lifestyle requirements.
Ken took our inputs and designed a home that fits our life style and the lake setting perfectly.
Our home is a wonderful gathering place with family and friends, many which describe it as an amazing home.
In Wright circles, the term 'organic' is used so often that we take it for granted.
We see and experience Wright's architectural works and intuitively agree that the word organic seems an appropriate classification.
But when you try to be exact in putting down a definition of organic architecture, it is anything but a simple matter.
Even Wright himself, who wrote extensively on his ideas, seems to have had difficulty conveying what it was he was after.
Does organic as Wright used it mean biological?
In the last article, we saw how difficult it was to define organic architecture, and by process of elimination, we saw many things that may be necessary but are clearly not sufficient to define this elusive term.
The fact that Wright's buildings do seem to have a special connection to nature and yet do not imitate nature nor dissolve into nature and lose their own identity as man-made objects is a clue for us, however.
How is it that we intuitively grasp a great affinity with nature when we experience the spaces of Wright's architecture even though he never imitates nature?
In the last issue's Wright Thoughtsarticle, I wrote that Frank Lloyd Wright not only opposed traditional architecture but also the later developing modernism when it took root in Europe in the 1920's and 30's.
Even though many have attributed this to the architect's ego, especially one as large as Wrights, I proposed that there may be something more significant than that which, if understood, will give us greater insight into Wright's philosophy of design.
However, before exploring modernism, first we will look at Wright's early Prairie period and his reaction against the prevailing traditional styles around the turn of the 20th century.
