Picture the proverbial garage studio of mentor Sidney Stubbs, FAIA, newly retired from an influential architectural career and two proteges, Charles Muldrow, AIA LEEP AP BD+C and Sam Herin, AIA. This trio banded together to start a new chapter; one that was coming on the heels of Hurricane Hugo's destruction to historic Charleston and our inspiring South Carolina Lowcountry.

Founded on the principles of quality architecture for its place, impeccable client service and a commitment to community, Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects was born. Prior to this January day in 1990, Sidney, Charles, and Sam had worked together at LS3P, the first firm that Sidney co-founded originating as Lucas & Stubbs. Sidney operated on the belief that the practice of Architecture is an art, science, business, and social trust.

This was evident in his many efforts to advance the value of architecture and the sense of place in our community. Thirty years later with Mr. Stubbs retired, and a simpler name, SMHa Inc. now has new principals who have been mentored with the same discipline of integrity and quality design espoused by the founders: Chris Altman, AIA; Margie Longshore, AIA; Billy Connell, AIA; and Jeff Johnston, AIA.
