In collaboration with the architect, designer and client, my goal is to create unique work that responds to the quality of light, the architectural style and the nature of the space. Using line as an integral element of design and using the refractive qualities of blown glass I craft a theater of light that is specific to its site. Frank Close began working with glass in Berkeley California in the early 70's where he studied under Casey Lewis, Peter Mollica and the influential German artist Ludwig Schaffrath.
Close opened his first studio in 1976 in Keene Kentucky, later relocating to nearby Lexington. In 1987 Frank Close moved to New York, opening a studio in Greenwich Village on West 12th Street. In 1993 he formed a partnership with glass artist Patricia Patenaude. Patenaude / Close was located at 115 Grand Street in SoHo. In 2000 he opened a studio on West 39th Street.
