C W Dorin Architecture
A primary goal of C W Dorin Architecture is to work directly with clients on projects at a more intimate scale than what you can get from a typical firm. C W Dorin architecture was initially created for a couple reasons. The first was to provide a direct relationship between the designer and the client. I focus exclusively on residential projects where I can work closely with the client on spaces they inhabit daily.

The second reason was to offer my skills as a careful listener and thoughtful designer. I'm someone who is patient with clients who want their voices heard. Each project has a flat fee tailored to each unique project, so projects move forward organically and client meetings are always free. We can get to everything without ever feeling rushed. Perhaps one of the most important things for me was to offer the services of an architect so they're within reach of everyone, regardless of income.

Fees are generally within a given range according to project type, scale, and individual complexity.
Services
Some of the most exciting work is with existing homes.
Each has its own mysteries and challenges.
My approach to this type of work is similar to that of a surgeon: carefully, and with great precision.
Rent it out or offer the space to your mother-in-law, it's up to you!
A common situation that I encounter is a homeowner who has unintentionally (or intentionally) completed home renovations without a required building permit.
In other situations, a homeowner has purchased a home they think to be in compliance with building codes, and has even passed inspection, only to discover later that the home has unpermitted work from prior owners.
The clients for this project loved the inside of their home, but thought that the outside felt incomplete, and needed some added outdoor covered areas to connect their beautifully landscaped yard to their home.
The solution: a new "loggia, " an architectural feature that evolved in the Mediterranean region but is perfect for the mild and wet climate of the Pacific Northwest.
We also added two more covered areas, one at the Kitchen and another to form a 'sitting porch.'
The first challenge of this project was getting a functional entrance in a 3-foot space along the side of a 106-year-old home.
We accomplished this with a 1 retaining wall and a sunken patio that also provided egress from the new basement space.
The new kitchen and bathroom fit neatly around existing plumbing and utilities.
The 2007 economic crisis resulted in many abandoned construction projects.
This whole-house remodel not only stopped halfway through construction, but also wasn't designed well in the first place.
Working with what we had, this essentially became the rebirth of a remodel that had begun ten years earlier, only now with a new design team, an improved design, and actual working knowledge of the building code.
This pilot project masterplan was designed for Micro Community Concepts in collaboration with Patrick Hilton to address the growing need for affordable housing in Portland.
The site plan combined 38 housing units (including one six-bedroom house), gardens, community space, bike storage, and large existing trees on a small parcel of land in the Gateway East Corridor Plan District.
Two-unit residential housing was the primary feature, which will keep costs low but still provide abundant light & ventilation as well as immediate outdoor access to all inhabitants of the community.
