AIA New York State is the voice of the architectural community and a resource for its members in service to society. It is American Institute of Architects New York State's (AIANYS) Mission to represent architects and the profession of architecture in government and provide services to the membership. Architects within the profession saw a need for representation, to achieve influence and maintain the integrity of the profession for their needs in governmental bodies.
The AIANYS Board of Directors come together as a means of a cumulative voice for the 8000+ members and oversee the various operational aspects and activities. The American Institute of Architects was founded here in New York by Richard Upjohn with the goal to "promote the scientific and practical perfection of its members" and "elevate the standing of the profession."

Services
The origin of most trade and professional associations can be traced back to one overarching need-a unified voice to advocate on behalf of a group of individuals who share similar interests.
Like many professional associations, AIA New York State (AIANYS), an organization of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), came into being out of the need to coalesce and amplify the concerns of the profession, the built environment, and the protection of the public's health, safety, and welfare.
Thus, the primary reason for the creation and organization of AIANYS was to provide its members, and the profession as a whole, with a credible voice in the halls of state government, Government advocacy continues to be the foundation for its existence today.

Government advocacy priorities are developed at the national and state level, through extensive input from member surveys and policy networks, such as AIA's State Government Network (SGN).
The AIA Government & Community Relations Staff work with volunteer leadership to identify policy trends which affect the profession across the country, and share knowledge and best practices for addressing issues on a proactive and reactive basis.
The laws and policies that most directly impact architectural practice are passed at the state and local levels of government.
