Modern architecture has different meanings for each of us.
Trained in the modern tradition, for me it means a building that is derived from its functional relationships- where volumes and spaces are expressed in a sculptural composition.
Often this is referred to as "form follows function", the idea that the ornament of a building can be the expression of its functional elements.
Innovative construction technologies and expressing materials in their natural state are also a big part of modern architecture.
Lure Fish House restaurant project converts a mundane interior space into a fun place for fish and cocktails.
A former Coco's restaurant along Highway 101 in Camarillo, California the new restaurant welcomes hungry travelers and locals alike.
An exclusively fish restaurant, Lure creates a comfortable place away from home to enjoy the fruits of the sea.
The original large covered outdoor patio is enclosed to create an open, airy bar and lounge that animates the large restaurant as you enter.
Removing interior walls allows for the new horseshoe shaped bar that adds life to the dining room without overwhelming it.
Volterra, a small hill town near Siena has an ancient history working alabaster stone from Etruscan times.
Local artisans continue to work the stone and sell their pieces in the many stores and showrooms in town.
The Fratelli Bruschi Alabaster Gift Shop occupies the ground floor of a 14th century palazzo near the city gate.
Originally the livery stables for the palace it had become a mechanics garage for 30 years prior to becoming the gift shop.
The large cavernous space with vaulted ceilings, presented challenges and opportunities for the design team.
Christie's Beverly Hills transforms a nondescript office building into a dynamic neighbor to shops, restaurants and galleries on Camden Way.
The early California style facade is inspired by the location and client's desire for the building to express a sense of history and permanence.
Beverly Hills' strict planning department and architectural review process was an important consideration for the facade that is inspired by buildings typical in Santa Barbara and captures the spirit of Southern California.
