A major career decision was to establish a small studio in a natural setting where we could focus on creating a limited number of carefully crafted projects. We began on the Mendonoma coast in 1971 and relocated to the Dry Creek Valley near Healdsburg in 1993. Our work has a personal and humane spirit based on concern for the people who will occupy our buildings - resulting in places people love to use and experience.

Our work distills complex requirements and relationships down to a few simple strong ideas and strives to synthesize these into simple, strong forms. Our work is aesthetically refreshing, technically accomplished, and has received over 40 design awards. In 2008 Obie was inducted into the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects. Our work is reverently respectful of Mother Nature - our proudest accomplishment is when we are able to create projects that resonate with their settings.

With a legacy of site responsive buildings Obie continues to work with the landscape and brings insight into the work of our studio.

A whimsical headline for this project could be "Photo Gallery Increases Exposure with a Tight Aperture on Economy."
We were asked to transform a leased rural bungalow into a world class photography gallery with minimal design and construction budgets.
The clients required a simple solution ASA possible: before and after photos illustrate how this negative developed into a sharp image without a major investment.
A slatted screen facade of standard unseasoned framing lumber is used as the ground for an entirely new composition, including a parabolic opening, redwood stairs, turquoise handrail and massive boulder which serves as an entry sentinel.
My drawings strive to evoke a sense of space as well as form.
Not just the positive and negative compositional space on paper, but space imagined by the mind's eye as well.
Accordingly, the compositions are often suggestive and/or intriguing rather than literal and/or appealing to our traditional sense of beauty.
I think of my work as a search for meaning rather than a statement of perception.
Having always been drawn to nature I find that biomorphic images come to me quite readily.
I also respond to the sense of history and intrigue embedded in old vernacular architectural structures.
We are a recognized leader in environmental awareness and climate responsive design.
We see our exploding population as the primary threat to our planet's resources and the "green washing" of every new building as too often little more than a marketing ploy.
Our work utilizes many of the features now found in "green design, sustainable design, and LEED approved" buildings - not to accumulate points or credits, but rather because it's the right thing to do.
These features are not an afterthought and are both seamlessly integrated and a purposeful part of the project's composition.
