Open, uncluttered spaces filled with natural light, panoramic views, and easy access to the outdoors. Clean lines, clear volumes, and sensual materials in their natural form. The knowledge that you're conserving energy and natural resources and reducing costs. We place so much emphasis on how our homes and work spaces look, but how they make us feel is just as important, don't you think?

Our living environment should be warm and comfortable and nourish who we are. It should be our sanctuary that shields us from stress. And it should provide us with space for socializing with family and friends when we want to or retreating to privacy when we need to. Similarly, our workspaces should inspire us, energize us, and give us something restful to consider or contemplate (a beautiful view, perhaps) when we need to pause and think.

Everyone deserves good spaces derived from good ideas. Modern, energy-efficient design provides all the good ideas you can imagine, whether you're building from the ground up or renovating an existing structure.

St. Augustine once wrote, "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
Not content to read only one page, I spent a lot of time throughout my years of higher education doing independent architecture studies, traveling abroad to Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan, and also domestically throughout Northern California.
I wanted to see and experience the arts, crafts, cultures and, well, daily life outside of my "comfort zone" in the South in general and North Carolina in particular.
We're very honored to have our Haw River House included in Paul Hawken's new book, Regeneration: Ending the climate crisis in one generation available at Amazon and all booksellers.
Paul is one of our heroes: a selfless powerhouse environmentalist, NYT bestselling author, activist and founder of the gardening store Smith & Hawken.
Paul has devoted his life to trying to save our planet.
See page 207 for our Haw River House.
And big thanks to my photographer Tzu Chen for his great photograph!
It was a pleasure to work with Arielle.
She is a seasoned professional with an eye for detail second to none.
She never left our side throughout the building process and was always quick to provide alternative suggestions along the way.
Added to her artistic and technical skills, Arielle was very easy to work with.
We were impressed with her ability to clearly explain her recommendations while also listening carefully to our needs and wishes.
She understood our hopes and then improved on them.
We would be delighted to work with Arielle on any future project.
It is an "aromatic" kitchen which allows for cooking fragrant foods at very high temperatures while isolating the cooking odors from the rest of the house.
This requires us to design the kitchen so it can be completely closed off from the other rooms when needed.
We've also designed this house so that the main bedroom suite for Satish and Ping is separated from the rest of the house (see the little "bridge" element above.)
This creates a "quiet zone" for Satish and Ping for when they have visitors, such as boisterous grandchildren.
The Miller McWeeney house ("Miller-Mac House" for short) perches on the edge of a very steep mountain site.
This house is for PJ, a musician, and Katie, an artist.
This great couple has never had enough studio, kitchen or work space before.
We are trying to remedy that in this house!
We are hugging the flat part of this really steep site and putting two spacious studios underneath the living spaces along with loading zones on each end (see above).
The loading zones create sight-lines and open air spaces within the entire volume.
